Washi easter egg cards

I don’t know what it is about making it egg-shaped that transforms chocolate into an even more irresistible delight, but it’s an undeniable fact that I’ve proven with extensive personal research over three decades.

As a family of atheists, our easter celebrations tend to be somewhat ad hoc each year – we don’t have any religious traditions to observe, and being in the southern hemisphere, we don’t even have the “yay, spring!” angle to go with.

But easter eggs are something we can all get excited about.

This year I though I’d pay homage to this splendid treat, and make some cards with washi easter eggs on them. Because they’re pretty, and I can’t resist a seasonal craft.

Here’s what I did…

What you’ll need:
  • Pastel coloured cardstock
  • White cardstock (or sturdy paper)
  • A range of washi tapes in coordinating colours
  • scissors and/or scalpel
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Craft glue or double sided tape
  • Printout of egg template.

What to do:
  1. Cut your pastel cardstock to a piece measuring 4.5 x 7 inches.
  2. Cut out your egg template, and use it to trace the shape in the inside front of your card with pencil.washi easter egg card 01
  3. Using scissors or a scalpel, cut the egg shape from the centre of the card, creating a window. Set this aside.washi easter egg card 02
  4. Take your white card or paper, and cut it into a rectangle that is just under 3.5 x 4.5 inches. It’s best to use white for this because the patterns on your washi will show up most effectively against it.
  5. Stick strips of washi to this rectangular piece in whatever manner you find most pleasing. I went horizontal, but diagonal or vertical would be great too. Try to make sure you cover the whole surface in tape, with none of the card showing through.washi easter egg card 04
  6. Adhere this to the inside of your card, so that you have a lovely washi egg showing through the front window.

We’ll be sending these cards to friends who do celebrate easter, to wish them a happy holiday, and share the love.
